Twelve Ways to Grow Closer: The Dimensions of Healthy Courtship
Recovery doesn't end with sobriety. It opens up something a lot of couples in crisis never got to do the first time around: court each other on purpose. Sex researcher Patrick Carnes mapped out twelve stages that build a healthy romantic bond, and they hold up whether you're two people meeting for the first time or a married couple finding your way back to each other. Each stage is a skill, and skills get stronger with repetition. Here's a way to work through all twelve, together.
Noticing: tell your partner one trait you like about them, out loud, this week.
Attraction: ask a question you've never asked before. People keep changing, so stay curious about who your partner is now.
Flirtation: send a playful text in the middle of the day. A wink of interest, nothing more.
Demonstration: let your partner watch you do something you're good at.
Romance: plan an evening with no agenda but each other. Say what you feel before you act on it.
Individuation: practice one honest "no" this week, without over-explaining or apologizing for it.
Intimacy: share something small and true you haven't told your partner yet.
Touching: ask before you touch, even affectionate touch. Consent builds trust faster than habit does.
Foreplay: slow down. Let the lead-up matter as much as what follows.
Intercourse: talk beforehand about what safety and presence look like for both of you.
Commitment: say plainly what you're choosing, and why, in your own words.
Renewal: pick one dimension above and come back to it every month. Courtship isn't a phase you finish. It's a habit you keep.
Couples healing from betrayal or compulsive sexual behavior often skipped several of these stages the first time, moving straight from noticing to intercourse without much in between. Working back through them, in order and at a pace you can both tolerate, gives the relationship groundwork it may never have had. Expect this to take months to years, not weeks. That timeline is normal.
